With a maximum height of just 2.25 metres, they fall well below the 2.5 m threshold, meaning you typically won’t need permission—especially if the pergola is freestanding and not attached to your house.
Just ensure that the structure doesn’t cover more than 50% of your garden and that it’s not placed within 2 metres of a boundary if it exceeds height limits. Always check with your local authority if you're unsure, particularly for listed buildings or conservation areas.

The main difference between a pergola and a gazebo lies in their structure and functionality. A gazebo is a covered outdoor structure with a solid roof, sometimes surrounded by curtains or walls.
