Information about container roofing

Roofing system between two containers on a construction site

Container roofing is particularly useful for those working in trade, industry and agriculture. It is used as a secure covering for mobile silos and bulk goods halls, or to create weather-proof shelter between two containers. The shelter can be used to create workspace or serves as a safe storage area for machines and goods. Statistically, House of Tents container roofing is considered the most durable and stable roofing available. No foundation is needed to set up the roof, and all the necessary anchoring systems are supplied. The construction is easy to assemble and disassemble, making it great for temporary use, e.g. on construction sites.

Materials and properties of container roofing

White prime tarpaulin in cast PVC

Designed for year-round use, the container roofing is made to withstand heavy loads. The section spacing of the vertical arches is 1.5m which allows the corrosion-free, hot-dip galvanised steel construction to bear heavy loads. Testing has shown that the canopy is robust and stable. If assembled correctly, the structure can withstand winds up to force 10 and weights of 40 kg/m² for the 6x6m and 54 kg/m² for the 6x8m model respectively. The rounded construction of the container canopy reduces the impact of weather forces, such as wind or downpour, and allows rain, snow and dirt to run off the sides. The properties are similar to many conventional high-end tent models, with the exception that the container top does not stand on tent poles. Rounded arches create a visually pleasing structure.

The highlight of the container roofing is the Prime tarpaulin. This PVC tarpaulin, which weighs approximately 720 g/m², is incomparable to conventional PVC tarpaulins. Prime tarpaulins are produced by casting liquid PVC around a dense inner fabric. This produces an extremely robust PVC material that is nine times more tear-resistant than conventional PVC. The Prime tarpaulin handles extreme temperature fluctuations between -30 and +50 degrees Celsius with ease. It is UV-resistant, certified fireproof and 100% waterproof. The tarpaulin is held taut and fixed in place by a special belt system with ratchet tensioners. Tightly fixed tarpaulins contribute to optimum stability and prevent wind induced movement. This, in turn, protects the tarpaulin and helps to protect from damage caused by wind or extreme weather. One more thing: House of Tents has a 5-year warranty on closed, correctly fitted Prime tarpaulins, and a 10-year warranty against rusting through of the steel construction. (Please check specific terms and conditions on the warranty certificate for each model).

With the 4-in-1 twistlock system, there are four possible ways to anchor the container roofing:

  • By bolting to the twistlock system of containers: For this method, there are four solid steel plates at the corners of the container roofing, which are attached to the twistlock system. In addition, six further screw clamps are available for fixing the frame.
  • By dowelling on hard ground: For anchoring on walls or concrete surfaces, long steel dowels are supplied with which the construction is firmly dowelled.
  • By screwing to substrates: The container roofing can also be mounted on scaffolding using the mounting flanges.
  • By welding on steel beams: The horizontal cross rail system can also be welded on steel beams.

Assembly of container roofing

White prime tarpaulin in cast PVC

In most cases, no building permit is required for the installation of a container roofing. The construction is self-assembled easily. Depending on the size, it can be erected by between 2-4 people in about 6-8 hours. It is advantageous to use a mobile scaffold, forklift or a lifting platform. Only standard tools are required for assembly.

The first step is to set up the pole construction. For this, the vertical arches are first assembled and then screwed together one after the other through the horizontally running steel tubes. When the scaffold is in place, the tarpaulin is pulled over the construction from one side using rope. After aligning the tarpaulin, it is pulled tight and fixed with ratchet tensioners. Depending on the installation site, the container roofing is then screwed, dowelled or welded to guarantee a high degree of stability.

Accessories available for container roofing

Gable sides are available as accessories for the container roof construction. This gives you the option of having the roof half open, or fully closed. The gable sides are available for the front and back side of the roofing system. The front gable side is equipped with a gate that can be opened and closed by a pulling device. The same high-quality materials are used for the gable sides as for the roof. The Prime tarpaulin of the gable walls must be pulled taut and fixed by a special belt system. Reference example: Container roofing as canopy

In this reference example three 6x6m container canopies are used as a roof for a makeshift warehouse. They serve as additional weather protection during loading and unloading of transport goods and leave enough space at the sides and at the top for vehicles to enter the space. This ensures a dry working area in bad weather.

Usage: Canopy and rain protection when moving lorry loads

Requirements: Optimum protection against rain during reloading

Set up in: Germany/Schleswig Holstein

Trade: Service provider in the transport sector

Tent type: Container roofing with PVC tarpaulin

Size: 6x6m

Tarpaulin material: Cast PVC tarpaulin weighing approx. 720 g/m² with dense inner fabric and a five-year warranty on the closed, correctly fitted PVC tarpaulin (see guarantee conditions).

Frame construction: Robust tubular steel rods protected against corrosion by hot-dip galvanisation with a ten-year warranty against rusting through (see guarantee conditions).
