Container canopies - cover wherever you need it

Roofing system between two containers on a construction site

Container canopies are one of our most popular products for those working in heavy commercial and industrial trades. Allowing your business to multiply its covered storage space, the canopy connects on both sides to shipping containers or other structures. The semi-permanent shelter has countless uses. It can be used to create workspace or serves as a safe storage area for machines and goods. A container shelter is a great solution for outdoor storage as its design combines durability with absolute versatility. No foundations are needed to set up the container shelter (although footings make it easier to open container doors), and all the necessary anchoring systems are supplied. The awning is easy to assemble and disassemble, making it great for temporary use, for example on construction sites.

Our staff will be pleased to help you with any questions. Please call our expert customer service on 01473 37 82 89 or send an e-mail to service@houseoftents.co.uk.

Heavy duty materials that can withstand the elements

White prime tarpaulin in cast PVC

Designed for year-round use, container canopies are made to withstand heavy loads. The distance between vertical arches is 1.5m, which allows the corrosion-resistant, hot-dip galvanised steel frame to bear heavy loads. Testing has shown that the canopy is robust and stable - if assembled correctly, the structure can withstand winds up to force 10 and snow weights to a specification of 40 kg/m² for the 6x6m model and 54 kg/m² for the 6x8m model respectively. The arched shape of the container canopy with additional bracing is optimised for repelling weather-related forces, such as high winds and rainfall and allows rain, snow and dirt to run off with ease. The properties are similar to many conventional high-end tent models, with the exception that the roof is fixed to shipping containers or other sidewall frameworks rather than tent poles.

A highlight of House of Tents container shelters is the Prime tarpaulin. This very high quality PVC tarpaulin, which weighs approximately 720 g/m², is an industry leader. Prime tarpaulins are produced by casting liquid PVC around a dense inner mesh fabric. This produces an extremely robust PVC material that is nine times more tear-resistant than conventional PVC. The Prime tarpaulin handles extreme temperature fluctuations between -30 and +50 degrees Celsius with ease. It is UV-resistant, certified fireproof and 100% waterproof. The tarpaulin is held taut and fixed in place by a special belt system with ratchet tensioners. Tightly fixed tarpaulins contribute to optimum stability and prevent wind induced movement. This, in turn, protects the tarpaulin and reduces the possibility of damage from extreme weather. One more thing: House of Tents has a 5-year warranty on closed, correctly fitted Prime tarpaulins, and a 10-year warranty against rusting through of the steel construction. (Please check specific terms and conditions on the warranty certificate for each model).

With the 4-in-1 twistlock system, there are four possible ways to anchor the container roofing:

  • By bolting to the twistlock system of containers: For this method, there are four solid steel plates at the corners of the canopy, which can be attached to the twistlock system. In addition, six further screw clamps are available for fixing the frame to the side edges of shipping containers.
  • By dowelling onto hard surfaces: For anchoring on walls or concrete surfaces, long steel dowels with an extending threaded bush are supplied with which the cover can be firmly dowelled into holes bored into hard surfaces.
  • By screwing to the mounting surface: Container shelters can also be screwed onto other structural supports, such as scaffolding, using supplied mounting flanges.
  • By welding onto steel beams: The base poles can also be welded directly onto steel beams.

Quick and easy assembly - erect your container shelter in a day

White prime tarpaulin in cast PVC

In most cases, no building permit is required for the installation of a container canopy used for storage. The structure can be self-assembled without difficulty. In good weather, most models can be erected by 2-4 people in about 6-8 hours. We recommend using a mobile scaffold, forklift or a lifting platform. Otherwise, only standard tools are required for assembly.

The first step is to set up the steel frame. 48 mm wide vertical arches are assembled first and then screwed together one after the other through the horizontal poles. Once the frame is finished, pull the tarpaulin over the span of the construction from one side using rope. After aligning the tarpaulin cover, pull it tight with ratchet tensioners. Depending on your side wall structure (e.g. shipping container, brick wall, or other stable structure), the container shelter is then screwed, dowelled or welded to fix it in place.

Adaptable to your needs - create the shelter that fits your business best

Container canopies offer a wide range of solutions that meet the needs of your business. With four anchoring possibilities you can attach the shelter to just about any surface. You may want to use the canopy as an awning extending from the side of a building to a wall or shipping container. Our fabric shelters are available in widths of 6m, 8m or 10m. Naturally, the length of the roof corresponds to standard container lengths, with 6m and 12m lengths in our shop suitable for 20ft and 40ft shipping containers. Ultimately however, the length is up to you, with some businesses extending the length of their portable fabric structure to over 50m. Likewise, you can customise the height of the roof, given that the cover can be attached to any height of side wall. Note that gable walls however, extend to a maximum height of 6m at the apex (for shipping containers up to 2.6m high).

Container canopies allow you to maximise the storage areas of your site. There is a wide range of possible uses, from use as a carport, to a hangar for small aeroplanes, or as a cost-effective warehousing area or an outdoor shelter to manufacture your products in the open air.

Case study: Container roofing for loading and unloading

In this reference example three 6x6m container canopies are used as a roof for a makeshift warehouse. The canopies are attached to shipping containers and serve as weather protection during loading and unloading of transport goods. There is enough space both at the sides and above for large vehicles to park under cover. This ensures a dry working area in bad weather.

Usage: Canopy and rain protection for loading and unloading and heavy duty valet bay

Requirements: Stable and reliable shelter from rain while loading goods

Set up in: Germany/ Schleswig Holstein

Trade: Supplier in the transport sector

Tent type: Container roofing with PVC tarpaulin

Size: 6mx6m (width x length)

Tarpaulin material: Cast PVC tarpaulin weighing approx. 720 g/m² with dense inner fabric and a five-year warranty on the closed, correctly fitted PVC tarpaulin (see guarantee conditions).

Frame construction: Robust steel poles are protected from rust by hot-dip galvanisation with a ten year warranty against rusting through (see guarantee conditions).

Accessories available for portable container roofing

Gable sides are available for transforming a simple shelter to a fully enclosed storage solution. This gives you the option of having the shelter half open, or fully closed. The end walls are available for both the front and rear of the container canopy shelter. The front gable side is equipped with a gate that can be opened and closed by a pulley system. The same high-quality materials are used for the gable sides as for the roof. The fire retardant Prime tarpaulin of the gable walls must be pulled taut and fixed by a tensile belt system.
